South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and partners are urging local people and businesses to pledge their support for South Gloucestershire’s 27,000 carers during Carers’ Week 2017, which runs from 12-18 June. A carer is anyone who cares, unpaid, for a friend or family member who cannot manage without their help.

This year’s theme is Building Carer Friendly Communities and gives businesses, charities, public sector organisations and individualmembers of the public the chance to pledge their support for carers in the local community.

Dr Jon Evans, South Gloucestershire CCG Clinical Lead for Long Term conditions and End of Life Care, said, “Carers’ Week is a national event to encourage the general public understand more about the challenges which carers face and celebrate the contribution that carers make to their friends, families and communities.

“Around one in ten people in South Gloucestershire are carers and these people provide unpaid care which is estimated to have a staggering economic value of £521 million per year. It is vitally important we ensure carers have the right kind of support to provide the highest quality of care for their loved ones and to help them lead happy and fulfilling lives.

“Carers’ week is a great opportunity to help us spread awareness of the important role which carers play and highlight some of the issues and challenges which carers face, often on a daily basis. The events taking place across South Gloucestershire are a great way for local people to find out more about what support is available and meet other carers and professionals.

“We are pledging our support to help raise awareness of the role of carers and the support which is available to them. We would urge others to visit the Carers’ Week 2017 website and pledge your support for local carers in any way you feel you can.“

Events taking place in South Gloucestershire include the Carers’ Week Lunch on Friday 16 June in Thornbury organised by Thornbury Carers' Support Group and a Mental Health Carers Group meeting on 13 June in Yate.  All carers in South Gloucestershire are invited to the Carers Open Meeting where a light lunch will be provided between 10.30am and 1pm on 15 June at the Vassalls Centre, Gill Avenue, Fishponds.

In total, there are more than 850 events taking place across the UK and there have been over 4000 pledges of support for carers so far.
